Rising With Ra: A Balloon at Dawn Over the Valley of the Kings

Before dawn, the west bank of Luxor is silent, and then the burners roar.
One by one the great silk envelopes swell and lift from the ground, glowing like lanterns in the dark. You step into the basket. The earth lets go so gently you barely notice. And then you are rising over the land of the dead as the sun comes back to life.
Hot air ballooning over the Valley of the Kings … speechless.

The Valley Below
Beneath you, hidden in the folds of the Theban hills, lie the tombs of the New Kingdom pharaohs: Tutankhamun, Seti I, Ramesses the Great. Their walls are painted with the Books of the Underworld, describing the night journey of Ra through the twelve hours of the Duat. In those books the sun god descends into darkness each evening, confronts chaos, and is reborn at dawn.
From the balloon you watch that rebirth happen in real time. The first rim of the sun clears the eastern hills across the Nile. Light pours over the fields, the temples, the river, and finally over the hidden valley itself.
The View From Above
Every initiation has a moment like this: the moment you rise just high enough to see the pattern. On the ground, the path felt like a series of separate trials. From above, you see that the river, the green fields, the desert and the tombs are one landscape, and that every step had its place.
In the Great Work, this is the dawning of citrinitas, the yellowing, when the first golden light of understanding breaks over what was dark. It does not last forever, and it does not need to. Once you have seen the whole, you never quite forget it.
Coming Back to Earth
The landing is part of the teaching. The basket bumps down in a field or on the desert edge, and you climb out onto the same ground as before, only now you know its shape. Integration is exactly that: bringing the view from above back into ordinary life.
A Practice: Rising at Dawn
Wake before sunrise once this week. Sit by a window facing east. As the light grows, recall a challenge you are inside right now and imagine rising slowly above it, higher and higher, until you can see it as part of a larger landscape. What do you notice from up there? Write one sentence to carry back down.
