Isis and the Secret Name of Ra: The Story of Philae

Even the sun had a name he kept hidden.

Ra had many names. People called him by them in hymns and prayers. But one name he kept secret, known to no other being, and in that name lay the source of his power. As long as no one knew it, no magic could touch him.

Isis wanted that name.

The Goddess Who Wanted to Know

The story is preserved in a papyrus now held in Turin, part of a magical text used to cure scorpion stings and snakebite. It begins by describing Isis as a woman “cleverer than a million men, wiser than a million gods”. She knew everything in heaven and on earth, except one thing: the secret name of Ra.

By then, the story says, Ra had grown old. As he walked across the sky, his mouth trembled and his spittle dripped onto the earth. Isis gathered it, mixed it with clay, and from it she shaped a serpent. She placed it on the path where Ra walked each day.

When the sun god passed, the serpent bit him. A fire entered his body unlike any he had known. He cried out to the gods. He did not understand what had happened, for the creature was not one he had made. He trembled, he shook, the poison spread through him.

All the gods came, and they wept. And Isis came too, “with her power, whose mouth is filled with the breath of life”.

The Bargain

Tell me your name, divine father, she said. For the one whose name is spoken lives.

Ra tried to avoid it. He listed his public names: I am Khepri in the morning, Ra at noon, Atum in the evening. But the poison did not leave him. It burned hotter than fire.

At last, Ra yielded. He allowed his secret name to pass from his body into hers. Isis spoke the words of power, and the poison left him. And from that moment, Isis, great of magic, held a knowledge no other god possessed.

The text never tells us the name. Some secrets stay secret.

Isis at Philae

By the Ptolemaic and Roman periods, Isis had become one of the most beloved deities in the ancient world, and her temple at Philae, near Aswan, one of her holiest sanctuaries. It was among the last places where the old Egyptian religion was practised. Read its history in The Temple of Isis at Philae.

The Teaching of the Secret Name

On the surface this is a story of cunning. But the mystery traditions read it more deeply. In ancient Egypt, a name was not a label. It was the essence of a being. To know someone’s true name was to know who they truly were.

Isis seeks the deepest knowledge in the universe, and she gains it. Not by force, but by understanding: she knows that what comes from Ra can only be healed by Ra’s own essence. She is the archetype of the feminine who is sovereign, wise and magical, who does not wait for knowledge to be given but claims her place among the gods.

And notice that the secret is revealed only when Ra is willing to let go. The sun, the great masculine power, must surrender his hidden name before he can be healed. That too is part of the sacred union: the masculine yielding what it guards, the feminine holding it with wisdom.

  • What is your secret name, the truth of who you are beneath every public role?
  • Where are you like Ra, holding something back that keeps you from healing?
  • Where are you like Isis, ready to claim knowledge and power that is yours?

At the Isis Temple

Kristina’s words from the Isis temple capture the feeling many pilgrims share: “Isis temple …wow! So stunning! Huge activation and ascension symptoms too.”

Perhaps that is what happens when you stand in the house of the goddess who knows the secret name. Something in you remembers your own.

A Practice: Discovering Your Secret Name

In Egypt, a name was the essence of a being. This contemplative practice invites you to sense your own deeper name, the truth beneath every role.

  1. Write down all your “public names”: the roles and labels you carry, such as daughter, partner, professional, healer, friend.
  2. Read the list slowly. Notice which names feel like costumes and which feel like skin.
  3. Close your eyes. Imagine Isis before you, calm and powerful, asking: Tell me your true name.
  4. Do not reach for a word. Let a sound, an image, a feeling or a phrase arise.
  5. Write down whatever came. It may not be a name at all. It may be a quality, a colour, a place.
  6. Keep it private for now, as Ra did. Let it work on you quietly over the coming weeks.

Isis teaches that true power comes from knowing the essence of things, including your own. Many people spend their lives answering to public names, never discovering what lies beneath them. When you touch your secret name, something reorganises. Choices become clearer. Boundaries feel natural. You begin to act from essence rather than expectation, and that, the mystery traditions say, is the beginning of real magic.
