Hieros Gamos for the Single Woman: The Inner Marriage Comes First

· kristina · 5 min read

You do not need a partner to enter the marriage chamber. You need to stop leaving yourself at the door.

Perhaps you are single, by choice or by circumstance. Perhaps you’ve done the healing, read the books, and still find yourself wondering whether love will ever arrive. Or perhaps you’ve realised that the love you’ve been waiting for from someone else is the love you’ve never quite given yourself.

In this article we’ll explore the inner sacred marriage: what it means, why every true union begins there, how the goddess Isis embodies sovereign love, and why so many women travel to Egypt alone and come home whole.

What Is the Inner Sacred Marriage?

The Hieros Gamos is the holy marriage of masculine and feminine. In ancient religions it was enacted in festival and ritual between deities, kings and priestesses. In mystical traditions, it is understood above all as an inner event: the union of the masculine and feminine principles within one person.

Carl Jung wrote of the inner masculine and feminine (the animus and anima) and of the coniunctio, the alchemical marriage within the psyche. Mystics of many traditions describe the soul’s marriage with the divine. And in Lisa Renee’s Ascension Glossary, the Hieros Gamos is described as beginning within, with the masculine and feminine in each person brought into balance before outer union between equals.

The inner marriage is not a consolation prize for those without partners. It is the foundation of every sacred relationship.

Why the Inner Marriage Comes First

When we seek a partner to complete us, we often bring our wounds into the relationship and ask the other person to heal them. When the masculine and feminine within are united, we come to love as whole beings. We choose rather than need. We give without abandoning ourselves. And we recognise a true partner more easily, because we know what wholeness feels like.

If your inner masculine and feminine are still at odds, you may find The Wound Between Us a helpful place to begin.

Isis: The Sovereign Feminine

Isis is often remembered as Osiris’s devoted wife, and she was. But she was also utterly sovereign. In one ancient story, she tricks Ra himself into revealing his secret name, gaining power over him. She raises her son alone in the marshes, protecting him from Set. She is called “great of magic”, mistress of words of power. Her throne-shaped crown declares her the seat of royal authority.

Isis does not wait to be rescued. She searches, she acts, she creates. Her love for Osiris flows from her wholeness, not her lack. You can read their story in Isis and Osiris: The Love Story That Raised the Dead.

Signs You Are Ready for Your Inner Marriage

  • You are tired of waiting for someone else to make you feel whole
  • You sense a powerful inner masculine you’ve never fully trusted
  • You long to feel tender, receptive and protected, by yourself
  • You want your next relationship (if you choose one) to be between equals

A Ritual of Inner Union

  1. Create a sacred space. Light a candle. Sit quietly.
  2. Invite your inner feminine. Imagine her: how she looks, what she longs for. Let her speak.
  3. Invite your inner masculine. Imagine him: how he stands, what he offers. Let him speak.
  4. Make vows. Let each promise the other something: protection, trust, presence, devotion.
  5. Seal it. Place your hands on your heart and feel the union.

Why Women Travel to Egypt Alone

Some of the most powerful journeys I’ve witnessed are those of women who come on their own. There is courage in it, and freedom. With no partner to look after, you can meet yourself completely.

And you’re not alone for long. On my journey, a group of women became queens together. At Dendera:

A divine healing process connected to the high priestess. Activations, healing, Atlantis and birthing. Words cannot explain. Thank you queens for trusting the process.

And then the joy:

What an amazing night – Galabya party on the Nile. These ladies know how to have fun!

Sacred and joyful. Solemn and wild. That is the feminine whole.

Amarna: A Homecoming Within

For me, the most powerful moment of inner union came in Amarna, the city of Akhenaten and Nefertiti. Through the teachings I follow, I had explored Akhenaten’s connection with Hieros Gamos, the sacred marriage within, for years. When I arrived:

I felt wrapped in the warmest hug. Tenderness. Familiarity. This incredible joy. Home.

Home. That is what the inner marriage feels like. You can read that story in Akhenaten and the Aten.

Practical Notes for Solo Travellers

Travelling to Egypt alone as a woman can feel daunting. A small, held group offers safety, companionship and local expertise, while still giving you the space you need for your own process. Shared rooms or private rooms, quiet time or connection: you can choose what supports you.

This is why the Hieros Gamos retreat welcomes solo travellers with open arms.

What Changes After the Inner Marriage

Women who walk this path often describe a quiet but profound shift. Loneliness softens into solitude. The frantic search for “the one” relaxes into curiosity. Decisions come from a steadier place. And if a partner does arrive, the relationship begins on different ground: two whole people choosing each other, rather than two halves trying to complete a puzzle.

The inner marriage is not a one-time ceremony. It’s a relationship you tend every day. Some days your inner masculine needs to step forward and set a boundary. Some days your inner feminine needs to rest, create or simply feel. Each time you honour both, the vows deepen.
